How to Choose a Therapist or Mental Health Clinic

When researching therapists and mental health clinics, there are so many options, it can be an overwhelming task. However, making the right decision is important for your treatment and health. By keeping a few key topics in mind, you can sort through the options and arrive at a decision more easily.

One of the best ways to find a therapist is to ask the people you know for recommendations. Various friends and family members have either been to a therapist, or know a therapist. They can tell you about their experience and share details about the therapist's personality and approach.

You can also start by requesting a list of mental health clinics from your health care provider. Then, you will be certain that the person you choose is covered in your health care network.

While finding names, take time to reflect on what type of therapist you need. They can be qualified with any number of specialties or philosophies. Some focus on unconscious motivation, others on adjusting and controlling your current thoughts. Some are solution-oriented for individuals, while others specialize in family systems.

Once you narrow down your list, interview a few in person or over the phone. While you are talking, make note of how you feel around them and their demeanor towards you. Are they easy to talk to? Do you feel comfortable in their presence? Are they truly listening to you and reacting to what you say? Communication is key in therapy, so you should be able to relax and talk to the person you select.

The search for good mental health clinics or therapists shouldn't be based on how close they are to you, but rather who has the best fit. With a little research and thought, you can find a professional for you.

Remember to check with your doctor before undergoing any medical treatment or taking any particular remedy.
